The end of the year is winding down and since Thanksgiving, Christmas and even New Years bring about some amazing dinner parties and festivities, get a head start on shedding some pounds this season. If you do not work out or have a gym membership, there are other ways to burn extra calories while slimming down. Comcast- On Demand, or similar cable providers have fitness sections to utilize. Here are a few suggestions on being active without thinking you are truly working out.

Household chores: Sweeping, painting a room or even rearranging furniture is great ways to burn some calories. Even watching TV… well between commercials, try jumping jacks, sit-ups etc. These small burst of commercial-break intervals can work off that snack you just had.

Taking stairs instead of elevators will rev up the heart and in the winter months having stairs in your house or apartment building is just as beneficial.

Dancing: Whether alone or with the kids are always fun moments. Try dancing for a certain amount of time and build up to a whole album.

Walking: Take a walk on a nice day around the neighborhood or on your lunch hour. Feel free to turn it into a power walk, jog or even a run. Opt out of close parking space when out and about.

Activities: Sports, swimming, playing Frisbee, roller blade/skating/riding a bike or even grabbing the jump rope. Oh and can’t forget the Wii.

Great habits to keep in mind are getting the proper amount of sleep nightly as well as taking in a lot of water, your body will thank you. When eating meals try using a smaller plate and since it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to realize that you’re full, chew and eat more slowly will avoid overindulgence. Adopting small changes in eating habits along with physical activity will burn some calories. It’s up to ‘you’ to determine when and how much you want to slim down to. Let’s get moving!

Do you really need to make a new change or a fresh start on New Year’s Day? Find yourself saying ‘another day, another dollar?’ If you dread your job, but want to be happy with a comfortable lifestyle…then make a change. Great things can happen if you just keep going. Never give up, get creative and get motivated. The massively successful people, at the top of their game, put in mounds of hard dedicated work, day in and day out.  If you put in the effort…the accomplishments will come. It’s not a set length of time when someone achieves success. You can’t force opportunity, but if you involve passion, persistence and patience everything will flow as needed.

Overcome fear. Don’t be afraid to reach out and connect to people who can help and steer you in the right direction. I know many people you stumble upon are just for self. They may have answers or knowledge to help but they’re not forthcoming with sharing or assisting you. Life goes on and you can’t let those types of people stop you. There are plenty others along your journey with open arms to welcome or assist in any way possible. You are as valuable as anyone else, so don’t get discourage of someone, company or groups success. They might be further along on their path but view it as if you’re their peer.

The days of ‘going postal’ on the job are over, as well as being unhappy in life. Just remember, you may have to sacrifice certain things but it should be part of your plan of what to expect when focusing on the big picture. For example, if an opportunity presented itself to work for the OWN Network (Oprah Winfrey) cleaning bathrooms, I would proudly carry my spray bottles/mops etc. cleaning the bathrooms while whistling, lol. It’s not a game people! I know Oprah runs a tight ship but she does great by her employees’- so I’ve heard with all the benefits, perks etc., well maybe you’re not sacrificing much, more like an even trade. Either way it goes the sooner you start the sooner you’ll see results; even a little progress is still ‘progress’ moving forward.
Have a great and blessed day. ~xoxo

Deciding between two people can be a tough decision to make. Some say it’s only dating so everything is fair game, while others feel like you need to make a decision because they’re not going to hang around much longer. So what to do when trying to decide on the right person? Here’s a question I was emailed.

Q. I’m in deep thought and facing a dilemma. I live with my boyfriend, whom I’ve been with for some years now but I have certain doubts and issues with him. However, my ex- my first love, and I have always kept in touch through the years. He contact me via social media and text my phone quite often. He’s single, have several kids but seriously want to build a future with me. He still live in our hometown but I moved away and when I visit back home, he and his family wants me around 24/7. I will always have feelings for him due to our history and can see myself with him. I do not have children yet but would like to start a family in the very near future. Help me shed some light…what should I do?

A. There are many situations like in the world, which it’s best to close one door before opening another, but there are several factors to consider. First take a look at your current relationship, weigh the pros and cons. How much love is there? Is the relationship equally yoked? Whatever hurdles you and your partner are facing, can it be rectified? Was he originally a rebound-with your ex or someone else? If so, the feelings and foundation wasn’t authentic or solid from the start. In situations, some settle or even marry the rebound person…it happens. Take inventory over your relationship and give a fair assessment. You must truly be honest with yourself and everyone involved.

As for your ex…well he’s your ex for a reason but many old flames have rekindled time and time again. By keeping open communication, you’re leaving the door open with him. The jury is still out on if a person can be ‘friends’ with their ex, especially if they’re involved in another relationship. Have you two rediscovered something that wasn’t realized initially? Has he matured etc?

Once you determine who and what makes ‘you’ happy, make necessary steps to restart your relationship with a stronger foundation. Don’t burn the candle at both ends- you’ll only end up getting burned. If you find yourself thinking about your ex often and taking frequent trips back home on a regular, you said you can see yourself with him; maybe there’s your answer.

I wouldn’t say discount him because he has kids, well some would take the amount into consideration but the main question is…does he take care of his kids? What type of father/man is he? Any crazy baby mama drama you need to be aware of etc? Does he treat you with respect and as a queen? Remember it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon. Re-establish his future goals etc.

It is never easy making a decision where you hurt someone you care about. Take a step back, clear your mind, consider all aspects, be honest and pray about it before making your decision. Have meaningful discussions with the two- separately of course, it may make your decision more clear. When you align everything right and in order, only then will things start to fall into place. You may even be surprised if life switched to transition you on another path: a path of growth and development of oneself. You may not have time for either one. When thinking about starting a family one would only want the ‘best’ candidate for that role of husband, father, provider etc. You don’t want to find yourself parting ways for the same reasons as you once did before.  Good luck and hope it shed some sort of light on your dilemma and what to consider. Thanks for the email.

There are many sides to this TLC story/movie and although VH1 broke records with ratings, not all parties were pleased. Many spoke out to various media outlets to bring clarification on their behalf. Pebbles finally spoke (on Wendy Williams) about the accusations of her cheating TLC out of millions. She blamed confidentiality agreements, becoming a mom and other things that led to her silence for years. Pebbles claim the money went to BMG, Arista, Clive Davis and LA Reid. She could only speak about certain aspects however all pieces to this puzzle may be revealed in her book, she told Wendy that she’ll have.

VH1 Networks and the TLC movie painted a very tainted picture of Pebbles; she insists things shown or said are false, except her carrying Chanel handbags. She stated T-boz and Left Eye wanted Chilli out of the group- due to her fraternizing with producer Dallas Austin and not her as portrayed in the movie.

Pebbles suspected that Chilli was sleeping with her then husband, L.A Reid, but could not be certain and for years didn’t want to believe it- another detail to look for in the book. In response to the alleged lawsuit against TLC, Pebbles issued this statement:

Photo: pebbles2day.com
“In Loving Memory of the Late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez- My heart grieves that her name has been pulled into a situation that she is unable to defend. I ask that we give her soul rest and peace, in regards to this entire situation. I have the deepest respect for her and her family.
The rumors circulating that I am currently suing the estate of the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez.
THIS IS FALSE.
The rumors are fictitious and fallacious.
I want to express my sincere appreciation to you all and solicit your continue prayers.”

Left Eye’s sister, Reigndrop took to the airs how the movie didn’t show the true essence of her sister Lisa. Some of the things she spoke about were:

·         In the ‘Creep’ video, Left Eye put tape on her mouth due to not agreeing with the songs’ message, not due to her not getting her way or a tantrum.

·         The family did sign off so the movie can use Left Eye’s ‘likeness’ in the film but that was the only involvement. T-boz or Chilli did not reach out to the Lopez family before, during or after the movie. (Reigndrop found out about production because a friend was an extra, which was her only time on set. She saw Lil Mama playing her sister in a scene and thought she did a great job. She discovered who portrayed her sister via social media. Reigndrip wished her family were invited to the production to give more voice/insight on Lisa’s behalf).

·         She mentioned Lisa’s creative involvement during the first album, ‘Aint too Proud to Beg,’ the condoms over the eye, the clothes, stage design on TLC’s first tour and putting fans names on the ‘Fan Mail’ album…all Lisa’s vision/creation.

The original “C” of TLC, Crystal Jones stated on a radio show they never auditioned for LA Reid, only Pebbles. Pebbles took a liking to them and they had dinners and often went to her house etc. They were given lengthy contracts at a lawyer’s office and due to being 18-19yrs old not fully understanding it, she turned to Pebbles asking if she could take it home so her mother could review it. She recalled Pebbles saying “No, Absolutely not!" So she didn’t sign it which led her being replaced, not the movies version- allegedly according to Crystal. She also has a book in the works, memoirs of her life which TLC was a part of. (Note: Everyone waited to hear her vocal capabilities; but producers were notified that Crystal was not going to sing at that particular time)

Unfortunately situations like these happen so often, especially if you’re an up and coming new artist. So beware, read every page in your contracts because once you sign on the dotted line, you’re held accountable but remember the label is your bank and any money withdrawn will be deposited back with interests.
Sit back and watch movies like, ‘The Five Heartbeats’, ‘The Temptations’, ‘Cadillac Records’, ‘Dreamgirls’, ‘Sparkle’ and others which depict some sort of insight as to how grimy/shady the business can be. At the end of the day, it’s still business… so be smart, do your research and find companies/attorneys etc. that worked great deals for other artists in the game, and contact them i.e. referrals/word of mouth. However, there are other outlets to shine and showcase your talents which may not require record label backing. Good luck to all. ~xoxo UC

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS SITUATION? IF YOU'RE AN ARTIST WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO OTHER 'newcomers'. Comment below.

The ongoing good versus bad and long versus short hair debate may never be rectified. It’s a myth to think black girls/women can’t ‘grow’ long hair. Also a myth, thinking females wearing weave, wigs or any type of extensions must have short hair. Yes for some it’s hereditary and/or health related issues but for others it takes knowledge, low manipulation and much patience. I grew up sitting between my mama’s legs as she greased/oiled my scalp and gave me therapeutic scalp massages. I still incorporate that method and others in my hair care routine, except I do not use hair grease at all.

A funny thing happened to me while over a friend’s house.  As I sat around talking to a few people, the subject turned to me wearing sun glasses and a baseball cap. I explained my allergies/bad hair day etc. as one jokingly said “It can’t be that bad but you need to take that ish out your head!” -jokingly referring to my hair. She tugged at my hanging hair from my hat(as she said it) . Everyone replied “That’s her hair she can’t take that out!” She was shocked but still not convinced she said “really, I don’t believe it.” She quickly stood up and snatched my hat off my head and started running her fingers through my hair/scalp. It all happened so fast, it was one of those moments like, “Did that just happen?” I know them well and we all laughed but I couldn’t help to feel violated as well. Many have the mindset that long or healthy looking hair simply can’t grow from our own scalp or only mixed races achieve such great hair. MYTH!

My hair is not in its natural state, due to enlisting help from the creamy crack police (relaxer). I’ve never had super short hair or hair touching my butt, but I made healthier hair choices, which done my hair a world of good. I’m not quite ready for the BC (big chop) yet but one day I’ll wing myself off. Baby steps, lol.
Here are some things I’ve done differently:
·         Relax hair twice a year- touchups only.
·         Sleep in satin bonnet/scarf and satin pillow case
·         Air dry hair after each wash/conditioning
·         Maintain the moisture/protein balance of my hair
·         Regular scalp massages
·         Deep conditioning (conditioner under hooded dryer)
·         Protective styles (braids, updos, weaves etc.)
·         Use less heat on hair (flat/curling iron, blow dryer- if use always use heat protector)
·         Make sure to use a clarifying shampoo when needed (too much product buildup weighs down hair and make it dull…even when washed)
·         Wrapping hair nightly (I don’t do as often as I should, but it helps)
      ·         Regularly trim split ends when needed
If you want to know some products I use click here and also here. I will admit that I do switch up at times due to my hair needs. I’m currently using these, click here and really love them…a lot! What works for me may not work for all. It really is a trial and error process depending on your hair type. A good diet and exercise plan helps also. (NOTE: I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and other times add them in smoothies, click here to see how I make my smoothies.) ~uc xoxo

WHAT METHODS WORKED FOR YOU TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY TRESSES? HAVE A QUESTION OR SUGGESTION? COMMENT BELOW.

Friendships are great but the ones that stand the test of time are most special. Girlfriend bonds as, ‘Girlfriends, Waiting to Exhale and Sex in the City’ are scripted televised versions of what friendship is suppose to mimic (good and bad). Consider these few factors below to determine if your friendships are healthy and worth having.

Photo: Yahoo
Do your friends truly support you?
(Pro) It’s great to know real friends have your back- and no ladies, not the kind that will help you slash his tires while you key his car, lol, not that type of support. They are there when you need them. They support your goals or dreams with encouraging words, opinions, and helpful ideas. You can rely on them if need be and it’s assuring to know they have your best interests at heart.

(Con) On the flip side, some so-called friends are barely or never available. You invest more friendship than they do. Any dream/goal you share automatically receive a negative response (sigh, chuckle or full fledge laugh- dream crashers or haters, I like to call them). They may be intimidated by how successful you could become. Don’t allow their limited ambitions and lack of courage block/reflect on your ability to shine.

Photo: winkandgun (Yahoo)

Do your real friends respect/value you?
(Pro) Friendships involving this trait are not easily broken based on these merits. The bonds are strong and healthy; they cherish you and treat you like they would want to be treated. They love what you bring into their life, whether great conversations, laughs, positivity/spirituality…a genuine connection. It’s a 2-way street but their true love and friendship shines through and won’t ever cross the line of over-stepping their boundaries to disrespect someone who they value as a friend.
(Con) However, if you never had this foundation it will never work. They have no consideration for you or anything you represent. They treat you as if you’re beneath them with no life at all. They will try to violate and devalue you because of their insecurities. They put on a united front for others they deem more worthy to make you feel less than, treating you unfairly. These are the type of ‘so called’ friends who can easily lose your friendship with no hesitation. So ask yourself were they ever your friend to begin with?

Photo: Clientrich (Yahoo)

Are your friends understanding and trustworthy?
(Pro) A great friend will be an ear to listen or shoulder to cry on. They are patient, caring and understanding. When matters of the heart bares deep they know the sensitiveness and not dare add more pain to an already hurtful or chaotic situation. A friend must feel comfortable enough to trust another with certain information. If you’re the lucky friend, feel honored they hold you in high regards, it’s a beautiful thing. It’s even more comforting to know a friend can keep private information to themselves.

(Con) Never negatively judge or voice how someone should feel or handle situations, especially when it didn’t happen to you. There is not one correct way to cope with dilemmas. What you can easily shrug off with no emotional invested ties, may not come as easily to the next. Only GOD can judge and measure how much someone can bear. You might have private situations going on, as well, in your own back yard (nobody’s perfect) but still have the audacity to judge or gossip about others. Please have several seats, sit down-lol! Don’t agree with a friend solely because it’s your friend but your approach may contribute to the flow of the situation. Timing and tact plays a huge part.

Lastly, the moment you divulge sensitive information to a friend but at some point everyone knows about it, you may need to rethink what you tell that person going forward. Not all information is meant to be aired in a round table discussion amongst other friends or family members. If others are joking, at your expense, about a hurtful or chaotic situation then ask yourself, “Are these people who I really consider or call my “friends?”

All in all, great friends support one another on their journeys, they uplift and appropriately voice their opinions in such a way not to hurt or disrespect. They show compassion for the friendship and add value to your life not taking away from it. If you are or have friends in the “Pros” category, congratulations you’re amongst a great group of friends worth holding on to. But, if you or your friends hold the “Cons” category up high, either make adjustments to become a better friend yourself or simply get rid of negative clutter weighing you down by delete them out your life.

Treating people in a poor manner, being messy, cutthroat or throwing shade really says a lot about that person. As we all know, you reap what you sow…so think about how you treat others the next time you’re in their presence. If you hit a snag with a friend but the friendship is worth holding on to…work it out, be a friend. You’ll be surprise how far communication, (an apology) with the words “I’m sorry” will takes you. ~xoxo uc~
How do you handle friendship situations, being on both ends? Comment below.

Not a veteran as an actor yet, but you can’t deny his talent for blazing trails in the Acting/Entertainment world. The talented witty and handsome actor Brad James, who plays Todd on OWN’s ‘For Better or Worse’, is far from the off the wall character he portrays. Although he is super funny, when asked if he would ever consider doing stand-up comedy, he humbly replied “Standup?! No no (laughs), I’m far from Kevin Hart (laughs).” James is an intelligent business man who’s diligently working his formula to success such as mentors Tyler Perry and media mogul Oprah Winfrey. There is more to this man than just those Wal-Mart commercials. Ladies this newly single man also talked about what attracts him to women. Read on as he discusses the show, Tyler Perry, meeting Oprah and the many things he’s involved in.

UC: Congratulations on another season of ‘For Better or Worse’ and your new home on OWN. How has it been this time around?
BJ: Thank you, Thank you. It’s been great being on OWN. The staff is world class, their goals are upstanding. One of the things that we as a cast noticed about working with Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey at the same time is that it’s not easy to succeed in entertainment. It’s even harder and more challenging if you’re trying to put out a positive message while you’re doing it and that’s something those two have in common. So we know we’re not just putting out some junk, we’re putting out something that has more than one purpose. Everybody else just has that singular purpose to entertain, but we have to entertain, inform, educate, uplift… and so we’re just honored to be a part of that.

UC: So what was it like meeting Oprah Winfrey?
BJ: You know meeting Oprah is one of those experiences that you’ll never forget and in a good way you always want to be remembered for good things. Oprah is one of those people who touched so many people through her work, through her shows, through her influences. Just being the first black female Billionaire is historic enough. But I’ll tell you when she walked in the room and I turned around and she said “Hey Brad” and gave me a hug. The first thing I said is “Oprah knows my name?!” (Laughing). So it’s a big deal and it means a lot, but aside from the superficial things on the surface that everybody notices, it really is to just understand the purpose behind it all. Nothing that Tyler Perry or Oprah Winfrey does is without a deeper purpose.

UC: Right
BJ: That may be why they have such outstanding success when everybody else thought they couldn’t. Realizing what your purpose is and going after that purpose instead of chasing a dollar.

UC: And how is it like working and being around Tyler Perry?
BJ: It’s ahhh (laughs) It’s a once in a lifetime experience and for me that means you never stop growing, you never stop learning. We just finished our 100th episode of ‘For Better or Worse’. Even knowing him I’ve done other shows with him. I’ve done ‘House of Payne’ and a couple episodes of ‘Meet the Browns’. So I’ve seen Tyler day in and day out and I’m still amazed at his work ethic. How hard he works when people don’t see what’s going on so he’s on set with us every day and people ask me all the time “Have you ever met Tyler?” Have I ever met Tyler?! Who do you think I’m fighting with everyday? (Laughter)

UC: Fighting? (Laughs)
BJ: Fighting with! (Laughs) because when you care about something you’re fighting for or fighting with it and he’s in the fight right there with us. So he’s directing every scene, he’s writing every script making sure that the message comes across and that’s what’s allowing me to learn so much.

UC: So what was the audition process like? You mentioned you’ve done previous work with him before so how did that come about?
BJ: The most interesting thing is…I’ve never auditioned for Tyler. My story is very unique. With season 1of ‘Meet the Browns’, I went in there one day as a stand in, I never done stand in work before, and half way through the day the producer, Mark Swinton, came up to me and asked “Have you ever done stand in work before?” I said “You just gonna embarrass me like this and fire me from doing stand in work in front of everybody (laughter). What he did was…he said “let me talk to you”, he pulled me to the side and the next thing I knew I was on the show and they sent the other guy home. That’s how I ended up on the show.

UC: Wow, so what were you doing before you were the stand in guy?
BJ: I was stand in for a day, I even wrestled with it wondering should I go because I’m an actor. I’ve never worked at Tyler’s studio and I didn’t want to get down there to see it, but I humbled myself and did something I normally don’t do in order to get down there. First of all I went from stand in to principle performer that day and they invited me back for season 2. I came back as a character for season 2…still hadn’t auditioned for them. And they liked the character so much they gave the job to somebody else. If you ever see a light- skinned guy that’s on that show, it was from the character I started on the show. I didn’t have any credits so they haven’t seen my work outside of there. I went out and started doing other TV shows. I did Teen Wolf, One Tree Hill, Let’s Stay Together, Reed Between the Lines, Single Ladies. Some of everybody’s shows because I realize you have to keep moving in this business and you want to be on your toes. When For Better or Worse came around they gave me a call and brought me in, it’s been a great relationship every since. So I’m grateful to them for the initial opportunities they gave me and then it’s like coming back home. Being able to come back and perform with people. I really care about my cast and crew over there. It truly is a family; it’s like no other environment you’ll see. I’ve never been on sets like this before.

UC: Out of all the work and shows you’ve done?
BJ: Yes because when you go on a film set, you’re there for a few days to a few weeks or maybe a couple months then it’s over, it ends. But, I come back to my ‘For Better or Worse’ family year after year and we grow together. We experience things together, hang out over each others’ houses. When I’m in LA I’m visiting with my casts when they come here they’re staying with me. It’s just a great time and relationship.

UC:  I bet the scripts per episodes look like a phonebook. (Chuckles)
BJ: Absolutely! Well not to give away Mr. Perry’s secrets and tricks of the trade. Not all is a secret, but its hard work. There is a lot of dialog, there’s over 60 pages a day that you need to know, to know that dialog in and out, there’s no play play…you better work. I’ve seen people go home (laughing). Remember that’s how I got my first job there I saw somebody go home (laughing) and I was like ‘that’s not gonna be me!’

UC: Wow, that’s right you took someone’s spot. Best advice Mr. Perry has given you in the business?
BJ: It’s really interesting. The best thing he’s ever told me… he’s shown me. Even when the world sees you as a success there is work to do. He’s working just as hard now as he was years ago when I first met him. They talked about him being the highest paying person in Hollywood last year. He’s working like, if he doesn’t work he don’t have a job tomorrow, so he’s on it but really love what you do. Nobody is giving it to you; you have to get it yourself.

UC: What can we expect this season on the show?
BJ:  You can expect to be taken on a ride because it was an adventure for us and we want the audience to go on the same adventure that we went on. We really do look forward to each episode airing. I don’t see episodes before they air, I watch them right along with the audience. We live tweet, laugh joke and feel it at the same time.

UC: What involvements are you doing this weekend as well other things under your belt?
BJ: I don’t want to tell you about my weekend plans (laughing). No, really I’m on my business right now. I have a lot of meetings and I also privately invest. I’m not one of those people that want to wait until after the money stops coming in or after the attention is off of you before you start to do other things. I co-founded The Atlanta Television Festival, click here for more information on that. It’s a really great initiative to help those that are aspiring and working to develop television programming right here in the metro Atlanta area. Over 51 TV shows and specials were shot right here last year and that number is only going to increase. So we want to make sure that those who are living and working in this area have a chance to be a part of that.

I also, through Brad James LLC, invest in multiple businesses so it’s a lot of good things that we’re doing. I’m an ambassador for other film festivals, like ‘The Peachtree Village International Film Festival’, that just happened recently. We have the ongoing Wal-mart Campaign. I’ve been doing that for the last year and a half. It’s the biggest retailer in the world and they’re here for a reason. We’re still promoting the movie ‘Prisoners
(Click here to watch the trailer)….just doing so much. I just released a film with David and Tamela Mann and a pilot TV show with David and Tamela Mann also, I can’t tell you the name because it hasn’t been sold yet but it’s a great story and I don’t have to be the funny off the wall character this time. I’ll leave that to Mr. David Mann.

UC: Would you ever do a horror?
BJ: I’ve done horror before? I did a film originally called ‘A Haunting in Georgia’. it’s now called ‘A Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia. I did it with Cicely Tyson, who played my grandmother and Chad Michael Murray. Yeah I do scary; I’ll do a horror again.

Thanks Mr. Brad James for a great interview. Don’t forget to check him out Wednesday’s on Tyler Perry’s ‘For Better or Worse’ on the OWN Network and look for many things to come from this actor. Congrats! Brad and continue to stay humble on your road to success. ~UC xoxo
