Trey 'Trigga' Songz is riding high on a promotional tour these days with his latest album entitled "TRIGGA" that dropped last month on July 1st. I caught him as he took to the Walmart stage for a brief interview, performing a couple songs, "Foreign" and "Na Na" and signing cd's for screaming fans. Word has it, he along with Chris 'Breezy', will soon join forces on tour, after all... they did a great job collaborating on stage with August Alsina on the 'I Love It' remix at the 2014 BET Awards. Check out part 1 as he describes watching Prince perform and more in this brief mini interview.



In part 2, Trey give fans vocal attention by singing, as all eyes and cameras were on him.

I caught up with the talented “Que” formerly of the group Day26. We talked about his experience on ‘Making the Band’, what he learned from Diddy and his current project; which he gave me a sample as he sung the hook to me. There have been talks of a Day26 Reunion, heading to a city near you in 2014. Read on for more of this gifted and humbled talent.    

UC: How have things been since leaving Day 26?
Que: Things have been very great and inspiring. I’ve been in the studio; I’ve been in Atlanta for the last year doing tons of events, charities…just giving back and staying in the studio to stay relevant. Not doing too much but enough so that it’s not over-saturated.

UC: So do you still keep in contact with the guys from Day 26?
Q: Yeah of course, sometimes they send messages like ‘hey we’re going to get back together’ or they want us to perform here in Australia etc. I get those phone calls about music still. I think that’s a plus for me and the group because we still talk about music. A lot of groups break up and they become uninspired and don’t want to do anything, so that’s pretty cool; that we still talk about music.

UC: Being on a reality show, explain what that experience was like?
Q: A friend told me about ‘Making the Band’ I went online then to New York to audition and my music career started on the TV show. Thank God I made it through as a finalist. It was an experience because it was MTV, and reality TV. Coming from a reality TV show and stepping on stages across the world, for example Madison Square Garden or the Staples Center, or any other big arena, the Russ Parr Tour. It was amazing to hear the fans scream and to actually come from a reality show and actual live it was magical and unbelievable. It’s like when you see a concert as a little kid, it comes to life, so it’s not a nervous feeling but it’s that anxiety like oh my gosh, ‘they screaming for me’ (laughing). So coming from a TV show that was made up and stepping into a career was pretty cool.

UC:  Right. So how was it working with Diddy and what was the best advice that he gave you as far as the business goes?
Q: To always stay well- grinded, humble and never give up because he said it on TV, there’s always someone trying to take your spot.

UC: I remember that.
Q: The thing about that, which I have to question a little bit, if you’re talented nobodies taken my spot because I can sing (laughs).

UC: All right now, (laughter) ladies he can sing.
Q: But I kept that in the back of my mind though, ‘because there’s people out there hungry and want your job/title. So as long as you stay well grounded and on top of your job as a performer, you’ll do amazing so that’s a great skill I learned from him.

UC: So you all had to walk to Brooklyn to get some cheesecake.
Q: We did have to walk to Brooklyn to get some cheesecake (laughing) and it was cold too, we were shaking. I still had to compete with about 20 people in the house. Diddy came back and said “ahh your guys suck, you’re not what we’re looking for” and he got some more guys in the house. After we walked to get cheesecake he brought new guys in the house and we had to compete again but that challenge we went through on TV basically made me the artist that I am today and I’m very thankful.
 
UC: I guess he makes everybody do that. How long did it take you.
Q: It took about 27 hours.
UC: Wow. Are you kidding? No editing, cutting etc.?
Q: Like 2 A.M in the morning all the way until the night time. It was fun though because he had the cameras out. I guess he wanted to test us; we’re men, so he wanted to see if we’re strong. See whose gonna talk sh*t, see whose gonna break.
UC: It’s a big weekend in the “A” what’s some of the things you have lined up?
Q: Basically, I’m going to be here today doing this and so I’ll probably be at other events showing my face, getting in and getting out (laughing).
UC: Right. It was talked about that it’s your Birthday tomorrow, Happy Birthday. What are you going to do?
Q: Thanks, I probably have a drink, a piece of b-day cake or a cupcake with a candle in it, something small. Just thanking God for giving me another year.
 
 
UC: So for anyone trying to get in the industry, what would you tell them?
Q: I would say ‘don’t think that there’s an easy route’. There’s no easy way of making it. If you’re gonna make it, you’re got to put in the work you got to put in the grind. You can’t just meet someone and think that you can take in from where they’re at in life. You have to find your own path and never give up. If you’re talented then someone will notice you eventually if you don’t give up.
UC: Any acting in the future, would you want to act?
Q: Yeah I like acting, of course.
UC:  What can we expect from you in the near future?
Q: New music, I’ve been in the studio working with some producers so I have tons of songs. They don’t want to release it because they’re really good records. I always say that I’m releasing music, I’m releasing music and it never comes out then I have to sneak music out so my fans don’t think I’m lying (laughing) then I get in trouble by a producer, they be like “Que what are you doing” (laughing). Music is coming I promise and once it releases everybody will be happy and I promise they’re going to sing the songs over and over again.
 
UC: Any you’re feeling right now?
Q: This record called ‘Cold’, it’s dope. The hook is… (singing the hook) “You know that she’s a villain villain she’s a villain money killin’ payroll killin’ villain, villain, villain, villain, she’s so, she’s so, she’s so, she’s so…”
UC: Wow that’s so smooth, that can put me to sleep (in a good way).
Q: (Chuckling) Right and it’s like not too far off from the left. It’s like one of those different records, if you heard ‘Perfectly Blind’ on Day 26’s album, you’ll be like you’ve never heard a record like that- one of those records, but of course I’m going to have the r & b records. I’m not going to step away from my element of r & b soul music and probably put a gospel song on there.
UC: Variety, because you’re not just a one type of artist.
Q: I love all Genres.
 
And ladies, for all you “Que fans” here is a little inside scoop about him:
-He like earth-tone colors: browns, green (money green), the green on leaves when they turn.
-He love Seafood
-He thinks Kevin Harts funny and like ‘Don’t be a Menace’ etc.
-He like intelligent women, women who stands behind him and knows how to communicate with him. A real woman, someone clean with great hygiene. If he confides in a woman, it should stay between them. Both parties should be honest in a relationship and respect each other’s space.

 MY (First) TLC Encounter, Being On Set With The Trio

 
I, for one, couldn’t be happier for the group TLC and their upcoming biopic said to air in October on VH1. It will star Drew Sidora (TBoz), Lil Mama (Left Eye) and Keke Palmer (Chilli).The biggest selling girl group of all times is celebrating 20 years. Recently the members were in Japan receiving an MTV Legend Award, Congrats ladies! And, hope they get the opportunity to give fans an awesome experience with a, much talked about, hologram of Left Eye.

I’ve been asked many times about my experiences in entertainment (music/film/print). There is a fascination with deleted scenes, raw uncut versions, exclusives etc. Many wonder what goes on, so speaking of TLC, here’s my first (UCBS: Urban Crush Behind the Scenes) encounter with the trio.

My first big experience, being on television, was being in a TLC video (actually in a couple). I had to audition (for the first one) which was exciting yet intimidating none the less. If you auditioned before then you know how daunting it can be, if not, allow me to set the scene…

You show up where hundreds (unless it’s American Idol, then thousands) of people are all competing. No one knows what to expect but you’re given a number, have your picture taken and fill out paperwork. You’re given instructions as they tell you what they’re looking for. So looking around, you start to see either clueless or game faces. Oh it’s on now, lol.

I remembered that the vibe was so electric. I met interesting people, seen production crew, bright lights/cameras and a colorful set, definitely something to experience. Sometimes you may find other recording artists or groups hanging out supporting their fellow artist/friend. I spotted producer Jermaine Dupri a few times walking in and out of a closed-off room. Hearing faint commotion from the crowd at various times meant someone famous was spotted. After awhile, I started to see T-Boz and Chili walking in from a distance, not long afterwards Left eye (RIP) strolled on the scene. Yep, they were three alike all small in height, like teenagers in high school. When things began to get underway, two lines were formed, one for models the other dancers.

The doors Jermaine kept going through finally opened only to escort a handful of people in at a time. The rest of us heard snippets of an unknown song (soon to be ‘What About Your Friends’), then dead silence for a few minutes. The doors opened again, out with the old and in with a new group (this was the rotation of the audition). There was much anticipation of what was going down luckily the first group eased our minds by giving us the scoop. Oh, ok freestyle dance for about a minute, how hard can that be, piece of cake lol.
As the line moved, I’m getting closer & closer, until I’m in the next group. I was super nervous but can’t turn back now. The doors opened and I’m walking in and sitting there were TLC, producer Jermaine Dupri, the choreographer and a couple others. I believe their ‘then’ manager, Pebbles, was present as well. All eyes were on us. A member of TLC explained the details, and another one chimed in to "have fun with it" etc. The music started and everyone went for blood, this was war, your hip hop battles and beef. No 106 & Park dance battles courtesy sirens here. I remember seeing people deliberately dancing in front of others just to stand out. One girl was flipping so hard that her watch/bracelet flew off her wrist and across the floor. You see heads coming together, whispers, writing things down etc. It was crazy, but you sort of black out for a second, but I tell ya, that one minute was an eternity, lol.

When the music finally stopped, no one could catch their breath, literally. They chose who they wanted and thanked the others for coming. A sense of relief came over me when chosen, thinking ‘yes, it’s over’. We waited and mingled seemed like hours until the audition process was complete, not realizing that this was only round one.  I remembered thinking ‘WHAT! Whoa whoa, you mean to tell me that I just danced my tail off, trouble catching my breath and you want me to do this ish again?’ I got Asthma, ain’t nobody got time for that! I’m surprised I didn’t pull out my inhaler right in front of them the first time! It’s funny now but looking back was something serious, lol.

However, I made it through the process and received the details/rundowns of the video, (what to wear, where to stand, what to do, and not do, when the camera is on you etc.) This was day one. Day two was hair & makeup and hearing “ACTION” as we filmed over and over again. It’s hard to keep up energy after so many takes (where was RedBull when you need it). We had downtime, ate catered food and other things. Wrapping up was late but at least it was completed. About a month later, I received a call stating they had to reshoot more scenes, so once again back on set. The end result: a very colorful but fun video with lots of goofy dancing moments and enough laughs for a lifetime. Check it out below, how many times can you spot me, lol.

LENA HORNE

ena Mary Calhoun Horne was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1917. Growing up Lena bounced around from state-to-state with her mother, an unsuccessful aspiring actress. At age fourteen she left school and by sixteen she danced her way into Harlem’s Cotton Club as a chorus dancer. She also pursued singing and took lessons and after several years she found herself singing jazz for Sissle’s Society Orchestra.
 
From mid-to-end of the 1930’s era, Horne would get married, perform on Broadway and appear in her first movie role (The Duke Is Tops). She toured as lead singer for The Charlie Barnett Band, an all white band, but had to leave each club after her performances. Horne would soon leave the tour due to traveling and this racial prejudice.

 In the early 40’s- a divorce and two children later- she found herself back to singing and performing in nightclubs. At twenty-four she recorded her first record with jazz greats clarinetist Artie Shaw and trumpeter Henry Allen and soon-to-follow radio series. Horne became a sought after singer, pinup girl and movie star. When Hollywood called, she inked a seven year deal with MGM, being the highest paying African-American actress/singer of that time. Her career soared and she graced magazine covers and more movies followed. She made her MGM debut singing the title song of Stormy Weather.

 

In 1942, she played lead role in Cabin in the Sky and this is where she met Lennie Hayton, a white pianist, arranger and conductor for MGM. In 1943 she appeared in three films: I Dood It, As Thousands Cheer, and Stormy Weather. The next several years Lena appeared in film musicals and secretly married her second husband (Lennie Hayton) in 1947.


July 1st 2009, the place, Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA. Awaiting Beyonce to take the stage at her “I AM” concert, as a birthday surprise to my daughter. The lights go out, everything is pitch black only hearing a sea of screams. On a half-lit stage stood Beyonce's opening act, a quartet, looking like a Destiny Child’s protégé, all with very strong vocal range and great dance moves. The group is Richgirl and their song “He Aint Wit Me Now (Tho)” is full of energy and laced with hard beats, my favorite in all of their 15 minute stage set. As the arena vibrated the crowd danced; many bobbin their heads to the beat, I remembered leaning over to my daughter asking “Have you heard of this group?” She responded “no”, But as soon as they would arrived on the scene, a few short-lived years later they would unofficially disband for reasons unforeseen.

 
Sevyn Streeter (of ex-girl group Richgirl) is also a talented songwriter who kept the creative juices flowing post Richgirl. Tina Davis, who managed Richgirl also manage Chris Brown. One day working separately in studios across from one another she noted to Chris that she writes and would be interested in writing with him. That encounter turned into three years of working with Chris. You may have heard her background lead vocals on Chris Browns' “F.A.M.E” and “Fortune” albums as well as Trey Songz’ “Without A Woman” single and a list of other artists, adding her beautiful harmonic tone. She’s penned for Brandy, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland and various artists.
Signed to Atlantic Records, Sevyn is currently working on her album while radio has her first single, “I Like It” hitting the airwaves. Check out the video…

 No matter how many radio channels a person flip through, you will not escape the sounds of, the-ever-so-popular-chart-topping-heavy-rotation, "Adorn" by Miguel. His latest album, Kaleidscope Dream, is in stores now. Miguel's unique style, clearly visible via his music, his look and his performances, raises curiosity. Although there have been gay speculations, he recently was on The Wendy Williams Show setting things straight. Miguel told Wendy that "he has a girlfriend of seven years, who was backstage, and he's in love". He went on to say that "he plans to make an honest woman out of her". Gotta love it, Kudos! He feels R&B music should not be sterotypical to one look or feel, but it's ok to be creative and experimental. It's refreshing to see artist giving fans, as well as the industry, creativity at it's best. I'm really impressed by what Miguel brings, very dedicated staying true to his craft. This is one artist that we will keep an eye on to see what's next for him.
