LENA HORNE

L
ena Mary Calhoun Horne was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 30, 1917. Growing up Lena bounced around from state-to-state with her mother, an unsuccessful aspiring actress. At age fourteen she left school and by sixteen she danced her way into Harlem’s Cotton Club as a chorus dancer. She also pursued singing and took lessons and after several years she found herself singing jazz for Sissle’s Society Orchestra.

From mid-to-end of the 1930’s era, Horne would get married, perform on Broadway and appear in her first movie role (The Duke Is Tops). She toured as lead singer for The Charlie Barnett Band, an all white band, but had to leave each club after her performances. Horne would soon leave the tour due to traveling and this racial prejudice.

In the early 40’s- a divorce and two children later- she found herself back to singing and performing in nightclubs. At twenty-four she recorded her first record with jazz greats clarinetist Artie Shaw and trumpeter Henry Allen and soon-to-follow radio series. Horne became a sought after singer, pinup girl and movie star. When Hollywood called, she inked a seven year deal with MGM, being the highest paying African-American actress/singer of that time. Her career soared and she graced magazine covers and more movies followed. She made her MGM debut singing the title song of Stormy Weather.

In 1942, she played lead role in Cabin in the Sky and this is where she met Lennie Hayton, a white pianist, arranger and conductor for MGM. In 1943 she appeared in three films: I Dood It, As Thousands Cheer, and Stormy Weather. The next several years Lena appeared in film musicals and secretly married her second husband (Lennie Hayton) in 1947.

If you are suffering from some skin issues and need natural relief, try 100% pure Neem Oil. This oil has been a part of the Ayurveda medicine for thousands of years and has therapeutic properties similar to Tea Tree Oil.

It can be found in toothpaste and mouthwashes which aid in healthy teeth and gums- keeping gingivitis and cavities at bay.

Recently I took a trip to my local Whole foods Market to get one of my favorite healthy snacks…JUST APPLES!! This snack is a great on-the-go choice with only 100 calories per servings (servings per container 3). Each pouch is the equivalent to approx. 6 apples and I love the cut matchstick style (which they were out of). I grabbed the last two packages (pic to the left,  3 oz $4.39 ea. ) but no matter the cut, they deliver the same sweet-tart taste. Although, I can eat straight from the pouch they‘re a great addition to any muffins, hot cereals etc. Visit their website at here.

So, here is my true story tip I want to share. I'm an approachable person, so I get approached often with questions, opinions about certain subjects…believe me, it happens quit frequently and I’m happy to assist those in need of some sort.  While in Whole Foods- trying to decide between several coconut waters or various ice teas- a very friendly yet distinguished professional looking woman stood beside me. She reminded me as someone in the television/film or media industry. I didn’t catch her name, but she began a friendly conversation with me, as we talked I couldn’t help but to notice her radiant skin tone (no make-up).

I inquired about the skin products she use, she responded that for over 20 years she has faithfully used….wait for it…Avon Anew Cleanser and Moisturizer daily.

She use a homemade, sugar and olive oil mix, facial scrub once a week (because the skin renews itself every 3 days). She also informed me of an egg white facial, only applying the egg white on the face for a few minutes until it becomes tight, then rinse. Wow, for 20 years and I must say the results were amazing, no dermatologist needed! By the way, she did mention she’s in the beauty business and have been for many years now. I may do a review on this product to see how it works for my combination skin. Visit Avon's website to find out more about their products here. If anyone used this product drop me a line and let me know if it worked wonders for you.

Recently I took a trip to, the newly built, TGI FRIDAYS in my area. Upon arriving (we circled the building a couple times) before we finally settling into a vacant park space, business was going well. I excused the 30 minute waiting time to be seated, but this location had an upper level overlooking downstairs, the sports bar feel with huge wood beams across the sloped ceilings were nice; unlike the typical FRIDAY’s locations I visited. I really love Friday’s and wanted to share the delicious dishes (say that three times) that we enjoyed.

Asian Boneless Wings, Crispy Shrimp and Jack Daniels Ribs

This Jack Daniels Platter/Combo is very was feeling and the sauce is sooo good but sweet!

Sizzling Chicken & Shrimp with Garlic Mash Potatoes (NO CHARGE)

Due to a employee shift change, our wait was even a bit longer- once seated. The GM, Waymon, was thoroughly professional with great customer service skills. Waymon became our personal server; due to inconveniences regarding wait time and an original ordered dish. When the meal finally arrived, wow. Talk about Chicken that melts in your mouth...and the buttery sauteed shrimp, yum.Not only did we get our house salad, we ordered, on the house but also this complimentary meal as well (below). I don't eat a lot of hot and spicy foods, but this meal was not too bad, just a nice little kick. I actually make my own seafood pasta similar to this (I'll demo and recipe it in another later post).

Cajun Shrimp & Chicken Pasta (NO CHARGE)

Not shown, TGI FRIDAY'S House Salad with bread...also NO CHARGE! This isolated bad experience turned out to be ok and didn’t sway my decision to ban FRIDAY’S for life, lol… in fact, I will revisit and hope to see the GM, Waymon. Thank you for your courtesy and remedy any problems.

Brownie Obsession (my absolutely fave)
Ok…what can I say…this is by far my favorite FRIDAY’S dessert….BROWNIE OBSESSION, so rich, gooey, tempting. It’s hard  for me to back away from this one, whew! Lol!

February 14, a highlighted day for lovers of all kind. This post may be a brief reminder
for all the ‘Johnny come lately’ people who, for whatever reason, waited the last second to participate in today’s festivities. Although most take part and acknowledge this day, others view it as a commercially inflated holiday to drain unnecessary finances out of the consumer.

For those coupled up in a healthy productive relationship, this day among others, can be a beautiful occasion. There’s a misconception that Valentine’s Day is only reserved for women but men clearly get full benefits when they play their cards right as well. Year after year flowers, cards, chocolate, dinner and stuffed animals will forever be a staple. If you present a staple gift, also do something unexpected; a helicopter ride, a day cruise, or a personalized gift with his/her name or personal message engraved on it, the ideas are endless. I am a big fan of those in the creative club who put calculation in their efforts. Kudos if you top what you did the year before. This is where ‘It’s the thought that really counts’ come into play. I recently shopped a store where the Valentine section/isle was highly consumed with no way to even get a foot in that area, however, I was very impressed on the number of men who had some form of Valentine’s Day affection in their hand, arms or shopping cart (the most I’ve seen in years.)

Men (sidebar), there are several things most women will never turn down; money, a shopping spree, diamonds and lots of pampering and appreciation. But, there are plenty of practical women out there. So, you may not have a Black card, but may present a gas card, with today’s gas prices, lol, it couldn’t come at a better time. A piece of advice men, if she is a huge movie/music buff and like certain ones for her collection, although not romantic, but this is where ‘presentation’ comes into play. For instance, don’t hand your partner a plastic grocery bag and said “Here, Happy Valentine’s Day” and she see a few movies through the sheer bag -_- Really?! Straight-to-video unheard of movies you picked out for yourself. That would be at the top of the worse-gift-presentation list a guy never want to be on. I know many men are not the Suzy homemaker type, but with a little ribbon/bow, a nice little card in a gift bag/box could simply show effort was made. If you’re stuck on what to do or give, usually your partner may have mentioned weeks or months prior, of wants or needs in a conversation. Keep mental notes on this matter and you’ll be fine, but if he/she do not welcome surprises then you can never go wrong with keeping it simple.

Everyone enjoy your day whether a dinner date with your mother/grandmother, a
romantic outing, or a spicy sexy role play; swinging from the ceiling, whatever floats your boat, this day is about what we all seek...and that is LOVE, so give your person many reasons why you love them so.

*****What’s your most memorable Valentine’s Day, good or bad?*****

February is Black History Month and the spotlight is shining bright. We celebrate the numerous accomplishments African Americans conquered via the many walks of diversity. Take a look and journey back into the life of…undeniable greatness!

 Berry Gordy, Jr.

B

erry Gordy was born November 28, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, the seventh of eight children. He dropped out of high school in the eleventh grade in exchange for a boxing career, which lasted until he served in the United States Army for the Korean War. After his returned from the war, he married in 1953 but it was in 1955 where he began his musical interests writing songs and later opened a jazz record store. Although his record store was unsuccessful, he later met a man who would put him in touch with a singer by the name of Jackie Wilson. That encounter gave him the opportunity to write Wilson’s first major hit, and several other songs in a two year period. Gordy would soon turn his songwriting profits into producing. He quickly began building his resume promoting unknown artists and even The Miracles (with Smokey Robinson).

In 1959 he started his own label which later merged into Motown Records. With several chart topping songs Gordy’s efforts through Motown propelled many musical talents such as Marvin Gay, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson Five and a plethora of others. Not only did he work the public image of his artists, he also groomed writers and producers, with his steadfast style he later dubbed, “The Sound of Young America, The Motown Sound.” He later started producing several movies; The Wiz, Mahogany, The Last Dragon and others.

In1988, Gordy was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Fame but on June 28, 1988 it’s reported that he sold his interests in Motown for $61Million. Movies such as ‘Dreamgirls’, ‘The Temptations’, ‘The Five Heartbeats and ‘Sparkle’, all display a behind-the-scene portrayal of black owned music companies and their artists (a Motown-esque reflection comes to mind).

In 2001, Gordy established a relief fund to assist former artists from the 1960's and 70's, in the name of his late sister, Gwendolyn B. Gordy. He is a great business man who transformed a music interest into a well-oiled music machine. We acknowledge Mr. Berry Gordy for all his purposeful efforts and making an imprint on African American’s historical map. SALUTE!

Let me start off by saying (WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!), if you’re in the anti-Kardashian Klub this post is not for you, lol! Then again it could be. So, with that being said let me continue…

Pic: covers.lucywho.com
Most should be fully aware of the Kardashian Klan and their mega empire they’ve built all from just being famous right? They make fame look so easy, oh but wait…can we continue to use this excuse or would you agree they've turned their 15 minutes into various lucrative businesses. Strongly headed by momager Kris Jenner who definitely has the media and branding game on lock! It's reported that the girls can get in the six figure range for interviews, cover stories and photo ops. Being the very business savvy Kris Jenner that she is, she only co-signs with successful companies where the bottom line is in the Kardashian's favor. Besides getting her 10 percent, her name is inked on the shows as well as her book, endorsement deals and an upcoming talk show currently in the works. From a business angle, having Kris Jenner representation is a win/win for all. Take a glimpse at her midas touch...

As mentioned in a previous post, I wanted more organization starting the New Year. I’ve recently searched for jewelry holders/wall organizers in stores and online. I came to realize how expensive some were or didn’t fit what exactly I had in mind. Although I have a couple beautiful jewelry boxes, my collection was outgrowing the boxes. Finding a way to conveniently look at my jewelry selection for display was what I yearned. So my search turned into my own DIY project. I realized that for the price I paid for materials, I was able to make 3 different projects…all for under $30, what a deal!
Here's what I used:

-Wood
-Paint Sticks or (wood pieces about the size of a ruler)
-Measuring Tape
-Gorilla Wood Glue
-Duck Tape (Decorative)
-Cup Hooks
-Acrylic Paint
-Pencil

Home Depot have a bin filled with slabs of wood ranging in various size, thickness etc. The size I purchased was $4.01 -about 1/2 the size of a school chark board, (which was cut down to sizes I liked. I managed to craft 2 projects-17x24 each and this jewelry wall organizer- 14x24). If you go into the paint section and ask for paint sticks...they'll give a few for free. I was deciding on 2 different layouts but wasn't sure so I ask for both sizes (sm. 1Gal and lrg. 5Gal). Not pictured is the sanding sponge for smoothing. They have a small display of crafting/project wood various sizes, (I used Poplar and it was .98 each, I bought 14 but they were used for the other 2 projects...not this jewelry organizer.)
So let's get started...

Another year to a newer you, 2013 got off to a great start and hopefully many of you set aside a very promising New Year’s Resolution that you can stick to. As we know, starting a new routine for the first time or yet “again” is always the hardest. Like many, getting more exercise and eating healthier are penned on my list. Luckily for me a new LA Fitness in my neighborhood (currently in construction) will be ready to use in no time.

Others resolutions may include quitting or switching jobs/careers, getting rid of toxic friends, furthering education, quit smoking etc.
